Hells Gate Education Programs -
Secondary Students (Year 7 - 13)
Hells Gate curriculum based Education Programs for secondary schools cover a spectrum of subjects and can be divided into two strands.
Science programs focus on the understanding our world and how it works by looking at the unique features and processes involved in an active geothermal area.
Social Science programs explore the unique area of Tikitere (Hells Gate) focusing on our people, culture and history. Tours are designed to understand how people have interacted with this unique area and its cultural significance.
Different itinerary options are available depending on the depth of detail wanted & time restrictions but can include:
· An introductory lecture to programs learning objective, with an overview of our place on a global scale and focusing on Hells Gate in detail.
· Guided Geothermal walk focusing on programs learning outcomes specific for your class. Worksheets for each class group can be made available upon request for each topic.
· Science – Supervised pH, temperature and gas testing of the Hells Gate pools using pH meters and Gas Alert Monitors. For higher science levels (yr 12-13) full quantitative chemistry can be done at Hells Gate whereby through titrations we determine the concentration of sulphuric acid present in various pools.
· Social Science – Supervised carving activities with our Hells Gate Carver and Harakeke (flax) weaving.
