Geothermal White Mud

If you take a small sample of this mud and work it in your hands, you can see that it starts to run as a liquid.

This is because the mud is made up of layers and between each layer is water. When you work the mud, the water in the layers separate and the mud flows. This mud is what is used in cosmetics because of its property to absorb moisture as well as perfumes and aromas.

It is the closest substance in New Zealand that we have to quicksand.

As well as cosmetics this mud is also used in the drilling industry to exclude water from bores when looking for oil. As the water content of the mud increases it expands thereby becoming a very effective plug.
