Achievement Objective:
Gather and present information about the origins and history of major natural features of the local landscape.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
Identify and describe the different types of volcanoes in New Zealand.
Describe and present information about two different eruptions within the Taupo Volcanic Centre.
List the many effects volcanic eruptions can have on the environment & people.
Identify & describe different types of Geothermal Activity found in the local landscape.
Students will explore the unique legends of Te Arawa and how they
relate to our volcanic landscape.
Focusing Questions:
What is a volcano? How are they formed? What types of volcanoes are found in this area? What is a caldera eruption?
What is geothermal activity? Where does it come from? How is it used in Rotorua? What are the different types of geothermal activity found in the Rotorua district?
Programme Snapshot:
Hells Gate- Introduction and Overview to geothermal processes that form the valley, Geothermal Valley Tour highlighting different types of volcanic rock and how they came about - history & evolution of this unique valley. Insight into the unique relationship of Maori with the geothermal landscape. (1 1/2 hours)
Optional Extra - Opportunity for students to undertake supervised Ph and temperature testing activities in the geothermal reserve. (extra 1 hr)
