Team Events

Mud Rugby Tournament

What is more fun than playing rugby? …playing MUD rugby in geothermal mud! Four aside rugby teams go head to head in a single elimination tournament to find the ultimate Mud Rugby Champion Team for 2011. If regular rugby is just not tough enough for you then you need to enter this event!

Basic rules apply. Each try is worth one point. A player may pass or throw the ball to an onside player however passing forward and kicking are not permitted. A change of possession shall occur if there is a forward pass. A tackle consists of grabbing the player with the ball and bringing them to the ground, the tackled player must either pass or release the ball otherwise will be fouled. Players will get sin binned for high tackles or for using unnecessary force.

Mud Tug of War
Test your team’s strength with this sudden death elimination tug of war competition – with a difference! Teams will be drawn and go head to head, winning team will defend their place against the next team until we are left with one ultimate mud tug of war champion team.

Mud Scrum Competition
Crouch, Touch, Pause, Engage! Test your teams scrummaging technique to get possession of the ball. First team to push their side of scrum over the ball wins. Competition is a sudden death elimination challenge – last team in to win possession are our Scrum Champions!

Mud Volley Ball
If you’re a bit put off by the full body contact of the other events, this one is for your team. Test your skills in the single elimination Volley Ball Competition. Sound too easy?...Did we mention you will be playing in quicksand-like mud?

Individual Events and Activities
Individual events and activities will be running through out the day. Included in the Mud festival general admission ticket is:

Tours of Hells Gate
Guided tours of Hells Gate, New Zealand’s most active geothermal reserve take approximately one and a half hours to complete with a knowledgeable guide informing visitors on the history and interesting information about the valley. Join in on a guided tour or walk yourself through the geothermal valley.

Interactive carving and Weaving
Try your hand at Maori carving or make your own putiputi (flower) out of harakeke (flax). Also join in and weave a part of the Hells Gate tukutuku panel created to signify strength, hope and courage for Kia Kaha! Japan and New Zealand after the devastating earthquakes to hit both countries. When our large (1.5m x 2.5m) tukutuku panel is finished it will be auction off to raise money that will be donated to the Christchurch and Japan earthquake relief.

$2 Entry Activities

Ta Moko Face Painting
Show us that Warrior spirit! Get your own Ta Moko face tattoo- conveniently done in removable face paint.

Haka and Poi Lessons

Join a group lesson to learn the New Zealand Haka, discover the meaning behind the words and the actions of our world famous challenge.

Bentonite Body Painting
Feeling creative? Bentonite clay is the key ingredient in the Hells Gate geothermal mud. This clay is silky smooth and has a very special property of holding water between its clay particles – this means to create your own body paint you need to turn the clay to water by rubbing it between your hands, MAGICALLY turning it to liquid! The bentonite clay will be colored so you can paint your face or body to support your favorite teams!

Mud Swan ‘Try’ Dive
In the main mud pool, between events, games and at half time individual participants are invited to run a try over our try line. Show us your best Mud Rugby Try Dive and be in to win!

Stuck in the Mud:
The good ol’ Kiwi classic game of stuck in the mud will be running for half and hour at mid-day in the main mud pool. Children aged between 7 and 12 years old can come play in the mud where the aim of the game is to get as muddy as possible!

Other options:
Hells Gate Mud Baths and Spas will be operating as per normal so come along and warm up in the geothermal waters.

Hangi Lunches:
Geothermal steamed cooked hangi lunches will be available from 12pm onwards. Hangis’ are $15 per meal and consist of chicken, potatoes, kumara, pumpkin, stuffing, corn and other veggies. Also includes steamed pudding for dessert!
