OUR CULTURE AND OUR LAND MAKE US WHO WE ARE. IT'S UP TO US TO PRESERVE THEM FOR OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

Our Beliefs

MANAAKITANGA.

Manaakitanga is a concept in Māori culture that is based around the showing of respect, generosity and care for others through hospitality, kindness, generosity, support and Aroha (love). By encouraging one another, helping our loved ones, or doing something for a complete stranger, we create strength within our whānau (family)and community. It is that Aroha and strength we at Hell’s Gate wish to impart on not just those who we work alongside, but everyone who walks through our whenua (lands).

KAITIAKITANGA.

Māori believe there is a deep connection between people and the natural world. The earth is viewed as a taonga (a gift) from our ancestors and should be taken care of accordingly. This sense of guardianship is called Kaitiakitanga. As guardians of this land, we at Hell’s Gate see it as our duty to restore our land and reinforce our culture. Part of this process is creating a sustainable practice; reducing what we use, reusing what we can and recycling where possible, to leave this place a little better than we found it, for our future generations to enjoy.
